The College List Blueprint

Most students build a list out of names they have heard of. That is how you end up with nine reaches, one safety you would hate, and a very bad April. A list is a portfolio, and it should be built like one.

Start from the number you can actually pay

Run the Net Price Calculator on three schools before you fall in love with any of them. The sticker price is almost never what a family pays, and the real number changes which schools belong on your list at all.

  • Every US college is required to host a Net Price Calculator. Use it early, not in April.
  • Ask your parents for one honest number: what can we pay per year without loans we would regret.
  • A school you cannot afford is not a reach. It is a distraction.

Use the 3-6-3 shape

Twelve schools, split three ways. Reaches are schools where your profile sits below the admitted middle. Targets are where you sit inside it. Likelies are where you sit clearly above it and the cost works.

  • 3 reaches you would be thrilled by
  • 6 targets where your numbers land in the middle 50%
  • 3 likelies you would genuinely be happy to attend
  • If you would be miserable at all three likelies, they are not likelies. Replace them.

Check the middle 50%, not the acceptance rate

Acceptance rate tells you how many people were turned away. The admitted middle 50% for GPA and test scores tells you where you actually stand. Every school publishes it in its Common Data Set.

  • Search "<school name> common data set" and open section C.
  • Below the 25th percentile means reach, regardless of what the brochure says.
  • Test-optional does not mean test-blind. If your score is above the median, send it.

Make every school earn its slot

For each school, write one sentence naming a specific program, professor, lab, or requirement that fits you. If you cannot write it without looking anything up twice, the school is on the list for its name, not its fit.

  • That sentence becomes the seed of your "Why Us" supplement later.
  • Schools with a genuine fit reason produce better essays and better interviews.
  • Cut anything you cannot justify. Twelve real schools beat twenty guesses.

A good list is boring on purpose. Build it around money and fit first, and the ambition takes care of itself.

Want this done with you, not alone?

We build applications that actually get students in.

Our students have been admitted to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Duke and Cornell, with over $700K in aid. We take a small number each cycle. A call is the fastest way to find out whether your story is working.
