The Supplemental Essay Guide
The personal statement goes to every school. The supplements are where schools find out whether you actually want them. They are also where most strong applications quietly fall apart in November.
Why Us is a research essay, not a love letter
Admissions readers can spot a recycled supplement instantly, because it praises things every school has. Weather, prestige, "world-class faculty" and "vibrant community" say nothing.
- Name at least two things that exist only at that school: a specific course code, a lab, a program, a requirement, a tradition.
- Tie each one to something you have already done, not something you hope to feel.
- If you can swap the school name and the essay still works, it is finished in the worst way.
Where to find real detail in 20 minutes
You do not need a campus visit. You need the parts of the website that nobody reads.
- The course catalog. Find two classes by number and title.
- Faculty pages in your department. Find one professor whose work connects to yours.
- Student organizations, the campus paper, and the department newsletter.
- Degree requirements. Mentioning a distinctive one shows you read past the brochure.
Why Major needs an origin and a direction
The strongest version has three beats: the specific moment the interest started, the evidence you chased it, and what you want to do with it. Skip the childhood-dream framing.
- Origin: a real moment, not "I have always loved science."
- Evidence: the project, job, class or email that proves you pursued it.
- Direction: the problem you want to work on, named concretely.
Build a reusable core, not a copy-paste
Write one strong paragraph about your academic direction that stays mostly constant, then swap the school-specific layer for each application. That is how students finish fifteen schools without burning out.
- Keep a master document with every prompt grouped by theme.
- Leave blanks where the school-specific detail goes.
- Budget five to six hours per school to fill those blanks properly.
Specific detail is the whole game. Two real course codes beat a page of admiration.
